What is a conversion strategy?
A conversion strategy is a systematic plan for increasing the percentage of website visitors who complete a specific desired action, such as submitting a form, starting a trial, or completing a purchase. It encompasses goal identification, audience research, hypothesis formation, testing, and iterative optimization. It treats conversion improvement as a disciplined process, not a collection of isolated tactics.
A conversion strategy differs from random optimization in that it starts with a defined goal and works backward through the user journey to identify where and why visitors fail to act. The process includes understanding buyer personas and their pain points, mapping offers to each stage of the buyer's journey (awareness, consideration, decision), designing conversion paths that reduce friction at each step, and validating changes through structured testing. The narrow definition focuses on changes to individual page elements (headlines, CTAs, form fields). The broader definition views each page within the context of the larger user journey and makes tactical on-page changes informed by that context. Both approaches require a clear value proposition, relevance between the traffic source and the landing experience, and measurement systems that track progress toward the defined goal.
