How do you know when the website is no longer fit for purpose?
A website is no longer fit for purpose when it fails to meet both organizational goals and visitor needs, when analytics show declining conversion rates and rising bounce rates, when the site does not keep pace with competitors, and when the team is not confident presenting it to prospects. Analytical tracking is the only way to objectively determine whether a website is working optimally.
Key fitness indicators include conversion rates (are visitors finding and buying?), bounce rates (are visitors staying?), click-through rates and page views (are visitors following CTAs and navigating logically?), and average time on site (are visitors engaging?). If bounce rates or abandonment rates are significantly elevated, a UX audit can identify specific optimization opportunities. The assessment should start with the business goals: what does the company want the website to achieve (more sales, better quality leads, more qualified traffic)? If the site cannot support those goals with its current architecture, content, and technology, patching individual elements will not close the gap. The priority in any subsequent redesign should be improving user experience, which is the most direct path to reducing bounce rates and increasing both customer satisfaction and conversion.
