When is it too early to redesign a website?

It is too early to redesign when the site has not been live long enough to collect meaningful performance data, when incremental changes have not been attempted, or when the team cannot articulate a specific problem the redesign would solve. Minor updates might be made daily, while a full overhaul typically comes every two to three years.

A typical site overhaul takes at least two months from start to launch. If time, resources, and budget are limited, incremental changes are more feasible and more informative than a full redesign. Users tend to prefer familiar patterns, and incremental updates avoid the disruption of abandoning the current design entirely while allowing A/B testing, traffic monitoring, and customer feedback collection to guide decisions. Redesigning before establishing performance baselines means there is no way to measure whether the new site improves on the old one. The site needs enough operating time to reveal which problems are real (supported by data) versus perceived (based on internal opinions), and that distinction only emerges from sustained measurement.
