What is the difference between macro and micro conversions?

Macro conversions are primary actions directly tied to revenue, such as a completed purchase, subscription, or demo request. Micro conversions are smaller secondary actions that signal progress toward a macro conversion, such as newsletter signups, video views, PDF downloads, or add-to-cart events. Both matter because micro conversions reveal where prospects engage or drop off before reaching the primary goal.

Micro conversions fall into two categories: process milestones and secondary actions. Process milestones are required steps on the path to the macro conversion (entering payment details, confirming an email address, selecting a plan). Secondary actions indicate interest but do not directly result in a macro conversion (watching a product video, adding an item to a wishlist, sharing content). Tracking micro conversions provides significantly more data points for optimization since macro conversion rates typically sit around 3%, while micro events occur at much higher volumes. This larger data set makes it possible to identify specific drop-off points and test improvements with statistical confidence faster than waiting for macro conversion data alone.
