What is the difference between funnels and buyer journeys?

A buyer journey describes the stages a prospect moves through from the buyer's perspective: awareness of a problem, consideration of solutions, and decision on a specific vendor. A sales funnel describes the marketing and sales activities an organization performs to attract, convert, and close that buyer. The journey is what the buyer experiences. The funnel is what the team executes.

Buyer journey stages represent distinct mental states. In awareness, the buyer recognizes a problem and begins researching. In consideration, they evaluate categories of solutions. In decision, they compare specific vendors and offerings. Different buyer personas move through these stages at different speeds, with different questions and concerns at each point. The sales funnel (top-of-funnel, middle-of-funnel, bottom-of-funnel) maps marketing activities to each of those stages: TOFU content attracts and educates, MOFU content nurtures and qualifies, BOFU content enables the purchase decision. The funnel also provides a framework for the sales team to understand how close a lead is to buying relative to other leads. Both models describe the same process from different vantage points, and alignment between them is essential. When marketing activities (funnel) match what buyers actually need at each stage (journey), conversion rates improve at every handoff point.
