Navigation friction occurs when visitors cannot find what they came for, forcing them to search or click through multiple levels. Page speed friction compounds across every interaction; even 0.1-second improvements in mobile load time produce measurable conversion increases. CTA friction happens when button copy is vague ("Submit," "Click Here") or when CTAs are too aggressive for the visitor's readiness level. Structural friction occurs when the site architecture forces visitors through unnecessary steps, such as requiring account creation before viewing pricing or linking ads directly to signup pages that skip the landing experience entirely. Identifying friction requires analyzing user behavior through heatmaps, session recordings, and conversion funnel reports to find the specific steps where visitors invest effort but fail to complete the action.
